Travel Grants for Cases
Fellows in U.S. infectious diseases training programs are invited to submit cases for presentation during the 2008 Fellows’ 101 program. Each fellow whose case is selected for presentation will receive an $800 travel grant. All cases selected for presentation will be published on www.idimages.org, a free website that partners with ASM and IDSA to present cases from its annual meeting.
Cases that are not selected for presentation will be considered for publication on www.idimages.org. Fellows whose case is published on this site will be acknowledged on the site, but will not receive a travel grant.
Each submitted case should include images that illustrate important teaching points related to infectious diseases, e.g. cases of fungal and mycobacterial infections; viral infections; bacterial infections; parasitic diseases; infections of immunocompromised hosts; and tropical infectious diseases.
THIS YEAR THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON CASES RELATED TO FUNGAL ILLNESSES, MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT ORGANISMS, AND HIV, SUCH THAT CASES SUBMITTED IN THESE FIELDS WILL BE CONSIDERED PREFERENTIALLY OVER CASES SUBMITTED IN OTHER FIELDS.
Additionally, cases from pediatric ID fellows will be considered for presentation at a special session during the Pediatric Fellows’ Day program on October 24th.
If the case is selected for presentation, the fellow will present the case as an unknown to a faculty panel.
After the audience votes between possible diagnoses and the faculty discusses the case, the fellow will provide the diagnosis and summarize a few teaching points related to the case. Each presentation, including time for faculty discussion, should be 12 minutes. The case should be submitted both as a power-point file for presentation and as a Word document for publication. An example of the power-point format for the oral presentation and a Word document template for publication are available through the links, below.
REQUIREMENTS/APPLICANT MUST CONFIRM:
- the case has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere
- no confidential patient information is revealed
- if the case includes an image of a physical finding, a signed consent form from the patient or a legal guardian has been obtained
- all contributors have been acknowledged and have given their permission for the case to be published on this site
- the case includes the affiliations of all the contributing authors
- the units for all laboratory tests are specified
A cover letter listing these conditions and confirming that they have been met should be included with the case submission (see sample cover letter below). If the case is published, ASM and IDSA will hold the copyright on the case to protect against its use for commercial purposes by unauthorized users. The case may be reproduced for educational purposes by writing to ASM and IDSA for permission. Only fellows whose cases are selected for presentation at the meeting will receive travel grants.
HOW TO SUBMIT CASES:
All cases should be submitted in electronic format to idimages@partners.org along with a cover letter. The case should be submitted both in a power-point format for presentation and as a Word document for publication. See the sample power point presentation and case template for examples. The deadline for submission is May 19, 2008 at 5 p.m. EDT. Please e-mail idimages@partners.org if you have any questions regarding the submission process or the session at the meeting.
